Music Festivals In Houston

Houston is the 4th largest city in America and is lacking in the large music festival scene. Many people including myself ask Why?

The collapse of Free press was a heavy hit. The festival formally known as Westheimer Street Festival thrived to turn into Free Press Summer Fest. FPSF had a run from 2009 to 2017. The last few years were troubling as the festival tried relentlessly to dodge Houston’s rainy seasons. Rebranding as In Bloom Music festival the turnout was not as great and the festival did not return. At the same time Something Wicked, a Halloween themed edm festival, was happening at Sam Houston Race Park. Having run in to the same weather troubles in 2016, the 2017 show was the last installment. It’s rumored the partnered promoters having gone their separate ways the festival would not return. Day for Night festival had a good three year run with amazing art installations and memorable performances such as Aphex Twin and Björk. This mid-December festival ended its run in 2017 with the following year revealing unpaid performances and sexual assault allegations against its founder. Houston open air was a rock fans dream festival. After only being able to produce half the festival the first year due to weather, the Houston open air festival was canceled the second year and never return. Houston Whatever Festival had a run for a few years, ending with controversy in 2017. Houston’s Buzz fest is still happening every year. The renaissance themed festival, Middle Lands, happened once in 2017. Drawing a crowed of 60000, The little town it was held in decided not to host a second year. More recently we have seen the rise and fall. of Astroworld Festival. The festival was a large success having used the nostalgic name of Astroworld and having a start studded line up. The 2021 edition ended tragically and made national news with the loss life. There are smaller events running with some success. Camp Nowhere has been a fairly fun experience for the edm fans. Many Houstonians look forward to Jmblya returning.

Closing in on the last 4 months of 2022, the most anticipated music festival is Freaky Deaky. This large scale, 2 day camping EDM festival is held on the outer bounds in the city of Baytown. The 3rd installment is happening Halloween weekend. On the tail end of this event, a new festival will emerge in downtown. WeAreOne will make its debut at Eleanor Tinsley Park after having been delayed from its earlier spring dates. A little over 2 months away, we will wait in anticipation for its lineup to drop.
