Free AF

There is something to say grass roots movements.

After diving into the 2x failed “We Are One” music fest hosted by (insert sponsor here), it was refreshing to get down and dirty in HOUston’s 2nd ward. Having never been to Free AF, I attended the 1-year anniversary of this monthly event. Free AF is a community driven event made by the community, for the community. The vendors had some interesting products. One booth had jewelry made from bone, another had handmade pins and leather accessories. There were more physical print magazines than I had expected. But let’s be honest, I didn’t go for the vendors. I wanted that sweet fist-flying, spinning-kick hardcore music. I wanted to get in the pit and feel the pain music. This little spot scratched that itch. These bands delivered. Otis VCR put on a show and let it all out all the way from OKC. Pinkie Promise had a great vibe too. El jumbotron had the garage packed from front to back. After having a great time at this event, I’ll be sure to stop by sooner rather than later. Jeffer, Alberta and Johnny organize this free event and have a schedule that’s booked out months in advance. It is going to be interesting to see how this community venue develops. Being off any main road, it’s challenging to get to, as well as having little to no parking. This is far from the typical live music venue, but it’s an experience.
